Stimulating cognitive skills development in a German language class and language performance.

Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

Modern society requires new competences, among which are problem solving and critical thinking. Apart from specific knowledge and skills, new teaching concepts include the instruction in thinking skills in all curriculum areas. The goal of this research was establishing if and to what extent enabling students to master inductive strategies in learning German as a foreign language, which surpasses the specifics of the profession, would improve the students' language competency in the domains of reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar, as well as their intelligence. The results confirm that stimulating cognitive skills and inductive reasoning significantly improves the students' language competency, and that this is a result of the students' training in solving the same problem under different conditions and circumstances, in other words, a result of mastering the problem-solving method.

Alternatives oder übersetztes Abstract:	Alternatives Abstract Sprache In der heutigen Informationsgesellschaft wird die Fähigkeit zum selbstständigen Herangehen an Probleme immer stärker erwartet. Neue Bildungskonzepte fordern daher neben dem fachspezifischen Wissen auch die Vermittlung von kognitiven Fertigkeiten in allen Ausbildungsbereichen. Diese Untersuchung geht der Frage nach, ob und in welchem Ausmaß ein DaF-Unterricht, der auf die Vermittlung von induktiven Strategien und das Entdecken von Gesetzmäßigkeiten abzielt, sein fachspezifisches Ziel – kommunikative Kompetenz – erreichen und die kognitive Fähigkeit der Lernenden verbessern kann. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung bestätigen, dass die Förderung des induktiven Denkens zugleich mit und durch den Unterricht statistisch signifikant größere sprachliche Leistung im Bereich Leseverstehen, Grammatik und Wortschatz zur Folge hat und dass sie auf der Anwendung der induktiven Strategien beruht Deutsch
