Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

Training approaches in traditional sports are usually extensively documented. In esports and competitive gaming in general, the documentation regarding tactics and methods players can utilize to improve one’s skill and thus be a successful player is lacking. To assess and compare the training possibilities in competitive gaming, we systematically select different currently popular gaming genres and analyze them based on their established training methods. Thereby, we analyze game-specific training methods focusing on micro-related skills referring to the players’ control over small parts of the game, which highly depends on reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and visual perception. The assessed macro-training methods refer to higher-level game control involving strategy, resource management, and game or map awareness. We conclude this by assessing psychological and physiological aspects on the players’ game performance.
