Abstract

This paper presents a design framework for sustainable design and construction solutions of rod-node-structures, using inhomogeneous natural materials in conjunction with additive manufacturing. The framework is characterized by using a threefold strategy, digital form-finding, parametric and as well combinatorial design principles. The approach is demonstrated and evaluated by the design and prototypical realisation of a bamboo rod structure that is interconnected using 3d-printed joints. The framework is tested using small-scale physical models as well as a full-scale demonstrator, which has been proposed for the advanced manufacturing and materials competition of IASS working group.
