Abstract

Literature mentions a number of challenges faced by industrial enterprises trying to implement Industrie 4.0. The study presented in this paper shows that not all challenges are of the same importance to the industry. The survey of 253 companies in the German speaking area illustrates which barriers actually exist. The following contribution also identifies the specific needs of industrial enterprises implementing Industrie 4.0 and suggests starting points to align the necessary support with the most significant challenges like missing standards, skilled workers and know how.
