Abstract

Media disruptions are judged in HCI as having a negative impact on the effectiveness and efficiency of a task. In this chapter three examples are given how media disruptions may support learning activities. By taking a broader contextual view that is theoretically informed by Distributed Cognition, Activity Theory, and Mixed Reality approaches it is shown that media disruptions may evoke, enable, and structure transformative and constructive learning activities like exploration, elaboration, and organization of learning content.
