Todays digital multimedia systems concentrate on satisfying the high quality-of-service requirements imposed by continuous media; virtuaIly all applications serve for capturing, editing, or presentation. Next generation applications will emphasiz.e rea1­time creative interactivity and other new cbaracteristics with respect to continuous media. This articles identifies the important characteristics of these future applications. It shows the importance of adequate software engineering support; requirements for this support are derived The claimed characteristics and requirements are backed with experiences from experimental development ofnew applications.
