Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)
This Diploma Thesis describes new possibilities of interaction with a modern PC or workstation. In particular, the value of multimedia interfaces has been analyzed in order to support the user in a better way. This new user support can be done through new and novel achievements in the area of computer hard- and software. Nowadays, standard PCs or workstations are powerful enough to handle graphical User Interfaces. On one hand they are able to manage several applications running in parallel. On the other hand it is possible to add a modern graphics card to arrange these applications in a threedimensional environment. The main aspect in this Diploma Thesis is the integration of multimedia data into Virtual Environments. In detail, 2D-applications have been integrated into a 3D Environment in order to support the user. Well-known metaphors from popular applications like icons are still important. With integration of new 3D-Widgets, it is possible to get more support for the user. An example is arondell. On its cylindrical shaped body menu items are displayed. This new menu can be arranged more freely, and additionally it is more flexible in its size than the twodimensional pendant. With the help of these new features one can achieve a better overview and more organization. Metaphors from our daily life can be realized. The replication of certain office elements like a telephone or text-editing tools, the entire office or an office building offer known metaphors at the virtual place of work. The integration is based on two fundamental aspects. On one side, known applications like Microsoft Word or the Internet Explorer are integrated with Object Linking and Embedding (OLE). On the other side, with the help of WorldToolKit (WTK) it is possible to create a three dimensional environment where multimedia data can be displayed. The implementation of this thesis is a Internet browser in a threedimensional environment with 3D-widgets around it. Known 2D-Widgets have been extended with a third dimension for better display in 3D. Furthermore, new elements of interaction have been added. The already described rondell offers menu options in a new shape. The outcome of this thesis is the possibility of the integration of 2D applications into Virtual Environments without reimplementing these. Psychological aspects are also very important. Above all, the user needs support from the computer and not vice versa. Text style, color and sound, and the organization of widgets need to be analyzed. Future work to this thesis is the integration of more applications and in addition the development of new elements of interaction in 3D.
