The interaction of democracy promoter and target country context: The case of the OSCE in Georgia.
Technische Universität Darmstadt
Dissertation, Erstveröffentlichung
Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)
The empirical study "The interaction of democracy promoter and target country context: The case of the OSCE in Georgia" brings together the research on international democracy promotion—which builds on the fields of comparative political science and transition/democratization research, of International Relations and norm diffusion literature, as well as of peace and conflict research—studies on International Organizations, and organizational theory in an innovative approach. It explores the interactive contribution of specific types of change in the target country’s domestic political context conditions and of international democracy promoters’ organization-internal prerequisities to making context-sensitive adaptation and, thus, democracy promotion’s success more likely. By bringing the different strands of literature together, this study contributes to further theory-building by empirically testing the claim that democracy promoters apply “one size fits all” approaches irrespective of the specific country context as well as three hypotheses regarding the interaction of democracy promoter and political developments in the target country. The study adds praxeological value by allowing new insights into how regional organizations shall be shaped in order to be context-senstive and adaptable to specific types of change in the target country’s political context conditions and, thus, more likely to be successful democracy promoters.
