Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

In 2015 the Laboratory of Lighting technology at the Technische Universität Darmstadt performed a test series on automobile headlamp systems at the August-Euler-Airfield in Griesheim. The focus of this research was to examine how glare-free high beam systems behave under specific dynamic driving conditions such as oncoming traffic, crossroads, overtaking and bends. For this purpose a static “measuring vehicle” was equipped with a photometer to continuously measure the illuminance during the four mentioned driving conditions. To receive a correlation between the measured illuminance and the distance to the moving “test vehicle”, a GPS System was set up in both cars, allowing highly repeatable test conditions. In the oncoming and overtaking traffic situation, the glare-free high beam system produces illuminances comparable to low beam. In the crossroad situation, the system does not react and illuminates the vehicle at the crossroad with high beam. Last but not least, in the bend scenario the glare-free high beam system sometimes cuts the measuring vehicle out of the light distribution and sometimes not.
