Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

High speed air bearing motor spindles are typical spindle applications in ultra-precision machining machine tools due to the sophisticated requirements of these applica-tions. Accuracy and cost intensive work pieces are the motivations to ensure safe and proper operation conditions. For that reason condition monitoring is useful. A new approach with an innovative sensor type is presented in this paper. GMR-sensors are integrated in an air bear-ing motor spindle to detect shaft displacements and thereby vibrations and other shaft movements that affect the accuracy of ultra-precision machining. The paper describes the implementation of sensor integration into an air bearing motor spindle and also gives a brief view on first tests with the new system.
