Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

Melting experiments of unfixed ice in an isothermally heated horizontal cylinder are reported in this paper. Photographs of the temporal ice-water interface position and of the water flow in the melted zone are presented. The flow visualization shows the influence of the density inversion of the water on the flow regimes in the melted zone and consequently on the shape of the lower ice-water interface. Melting rates correlated by use of an analytical solution are in good agreement with the experimental findings.
