Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

Due to urban compression usually the question arises if existing building structure is worth keeping. Missing perspectives of future usage and the wish to create surface-optimized building structure are mostly reasons for that. To preserve architectural varieties and to esteem remarkable works of the past it is in the public interest to designate certain buildings as listed monuments and to keep them under protection of a country´s historical heritage. Recently buildings of the contemporary building history are involved in this process, especially buildings of the 1960s 'Moderne', which are protected as building parts, complete buildings or even as an ensemble with other buildings nearby. Growing expectations on the comfort and energy balance of buildings require for those protected buildings, especially if they are used for living, a refurbishment in line with preservation of its unique character. Depending on the planed purpose of use, the refurbishment requires careful working to protect the existing structure. As a result of an interdisciplinary collaboration with the office for building protection in Hessen this master thesis describes if and how the aims of Building Protection can correspond with necessary measurements to optimize the efficiency of the Construction- Works and the Building-Technology. The question is if contemporary and comfortable living conditions can be realized without harming the unique character of a building inadequately. With different simulation varieties including different daylight conditions and with an energy balance analysis this thesis describes on the prospected change in use how comfortable living conditions combined with a state-of-the art energy plan can be achieved. The focus of the analysis will cover thermal and visual comfort conditions of the interior space.
