Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

A new family of lithography-based modeld experiments has been developed that permits the introduction of micron-scale controlled-geometry defects at interfaces. These microdesigned interfaces can be used to study various aspects of microstructural evolution during sintering. In addition, they can be applied to studies of mechanical behavior of porous materials and ceramic-metal composities. Research utilizing such microdesigned interfaces is reviewed, and numerous potential applications of the technique are suggested.
