Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)
The dynamics of perturbations in plane Couette flow (pCf) is analyzed from the standpoint of probabilistic and dynamic systems. In the absence of a sharp transitional border, a probabilistic approach to the definition of a transitional Reynolds nunmber is employed. It is found that more than half the initial conditions remain turbulent for the full integration time if Re exceeds a value of about 320. In numerical annealing experiments, it was possible to follow the turbulent state down to Reynolds numbers of about 240. A promising approach for futher investigation is the embedding of pCf into Couette-Taylor flow between concentric cylinders. The planar case emerges in the limit of large radii and exhibits similar behavior in an experimentally accessible parameter range.
