Requirements for onsite test systems for the after-installation test of HVDC cable systems.

Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)
Any HVDC cable system must undergo an overvoltage test after installation and prior to operation. According to TB 841 [1], the suggested test voltage is 1.45x U0 for 60 min for extruded (XLPE) HVDC cable systems and 1.4x U0 for 60 min for mass impregnated (MI) HVDC cable systems. An onsite HVDC test system, designed for these tests, consists of a DC source to charge up the cable system, an external voltage divider to measure the applied DC voltage, a protection resistor to protect the DC source in case of a cable system breakdown and a discharge resistor to discharge the cable system in short time after the HVDC test (Fig. 1). In the future, after repair tests are also expected. The paper presents the requirements for the onsite HVDC test system and its components.
