Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

This paper investigates the dynamic frequency support of an inverter-based generator with fast frequency response in the medium-voltage grid and compares the results in RMS and EMT simulations. For synchronous generator dominated power systems, RMS-type models are widely used due to the relatively slow dynamics. In contrast, power electronics act on a faster time scale and EMT-type simulations are necessary to model and investigate the behaviour in detail. For bulk system modelling, inverter- based generators are usually considered as simplified models. This paper compares the RMS and EMT model of an inverter-based generator in a simple medium-voltage testbench and shows that the average value model leads to differences in RMS and EMT simulations when evaluating the dynamic frequency in time domain. The reason is that the local frequency measurement for the inverter control is delayed in RMS during transient processes.
