Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

Asphalt pavers are used in road construction projects all over the world. The goal of the BASt research project Robot-Strassenbau 4.0 (FE: 88.0159/2017) was to optimize the paving process and increase occupational health and safety by partially automating the activities of particularly vulnerable employees at the paving screed. One of these diverse activities consists of observing the surface of the asphalt mix being paved directly behind the screed and, if necessary, intervening in the screed control system. In the course of these investigations, characteristic values for potentially visually detectable irregularities and segregations were first defined and classified into three superordinate categories (segregations, scrapings or imprints and grain fragmentation). Sample plates were prepared in the laboratory that exhibited equivalent failure patterns. The surfaces of the asphalt sample plates were recorded using a flash/camera system. Here, the flash light was aligned with a defined angle. The viewing angle of the camera was quasi orthogonal. Due to the introduced lateral flash light, irregularities in the surface cast a shadow, which is used in the image- analytical evaluation to detect the irregularities. The lower illuminance and, consequently, the less pronounced shadows cast at considered points located farther from the source of the flash light can be taken into account by means of the known angle of incidence and the squared distance. For the image analysis of the asphalt surface, a tool was developed that is capable of cropping the image captures and, in the case of non-orthogonal captures, transforming the image. Using the gray value view, an average threshold value is calculated and illumination values are converted using a curve fitting. To validate the measurement program, the flash/camera system was attached to the asphalt paver during a field trail. The flash system used is capable of "flashing over" shadow casts as a result of solar radiation. The irregularities in the surface could be successfully detected by the image analysis.
