Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

Although machining is a well established method in manufacturing, the numerical modeling is complicated since severe changes in the geometry and the topology can occur. Especially the formation of chips and burrs requires a method that tracks the large configurational changes. The particle finite element method (PFEM) combines the benefits of the standard finite element method (FEM) and discrete models, such as molecular dynamics simulations and is therefore well suited to cope with these tasks. In this article, a description of the conceptual realisation and the overall algorithm is given and a numerical analysis of a cutting process is performed. (© 2014 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
