Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)
This chapter sets out to explain the core questions that lie at the heart of the book and introduces the reader into the basic concepts. First, it develops a multi-dimensional concept of federalism which allows to trace different directions and facets of federal dynamics. Second, it shows how it is possible to analytically distinguish various patterns of change in federal systems. Third, the chapter taps into existing theories of comparative federalism in order to demonstrate how these propositions can contribute to create a more encompassing framework for the study of federal dynamics.
