Biogenic Polymers: From Barrier Coatings towards the Design of novel low-adhesive Release Liner.
Technische Universität Darmstadt
Dissertation, Erstveröffentlichung
Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)
Release liners are composed of a thin silicone layer which is usually applied on a pigment-coated paper. The release liner protects the adhesive against contaminations during transportation and enables an easy release of the adhesive tape without impairing the adhesive performance. In this thesis, a novel method was established in order to produce a release liner by using less resources and introducing biopolymers. In particular, the porous paper surface was closed by a thin layer of different biopolymers instead of a thick pigment-coating. Hydroxyethyl cellulose showed the best results in terms of closing the pores of the paper surface and preventing silicone penetration into the base paper. The pre-coats should be preferably applied by a blade coater rather than a roller coater to obtain homogenous coatings. The release forces were significantly reduced from 6.5 N/25 mm, for siliconized papers without any pre-coat, to less than 1 N/25 mm with a pre-coating of hydroxyethyl cellulose prior to siliconization. In another approach, the silicone release coating was replaced by a silicone-free coating based on modified hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC). The hydroxy groups of the HPC were substituted by long, hydrophobic alkyl side chains in order to obtain a hydrophobic character similar to silicones. The hydrophobic HPC was coated on a pigment-coated paper and the film stability was improved by addition of glyoxal as a crosslinker. Release forces of about 6 N/25 mm were obtained with the silicone-free release coating. This silicone-free release coating represents a bio-based alternative to silicone-based release liner, which is interesting for "high-release" applications.
