Abstract

This presentation brings three key perspectives to the discussion of Accessible Hubs a.) Demographic futures and urban realities b.) Understanding accessibility and universal design c.) Research issues for inclusive mobility and ways forward. Citing personal mobility experiences, access audits and case observations from varied global contexts of mobility hubs like Frankfurt Flughafen & Hauptbahnof, Berlin Hauptbahnof, Roma Termini, Venezia Santa Lucia, Venice, New Delhi International Airport (T-3), Metro Station Hubs, New Delhi and Gare de Lyon train station, Paris etc., it highlights various features of accessibility planning and urban design of mobility hubs.

Speaker’s bio

Assoc. Prof. Gaurav Raheja is an architect with social thinking outlooks and a well known expert of accessibility and universal design from India. His research interest include human centric approaches to design along with other domains like urban social sustainability, children independent mobility and aging. He is working as an Associate Professor of Architecture and Barrier Free Transportation at the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Roorkee with over twelve years of professional experience. Also, he is appointed as Co-Cordinator of Design Innovation Center at IIT Roorkee.

Dr. Raheja has been an expert member and plays key advisory roles to the Department of Disabilities in Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India for Accessible India Campaign, 2015 and conceptualization of National Institute of Universal Design. He is one of the co-authors of Universal Design India Principles, copyrighted and released in 2011. He was awarded the Mphasis Universal Design Award, 2010 for his professional and research contributions in the field of universal design. He received the Guest Research Fellowship at TU Berlin in 2017, DAAD IIT Faculty Exchange Fellowship 2016 and DAAD Science Tour Fellowship 2016 amongst few others. He has been developing collaborations in domains of accessibility, urban futures and urban mobility with German universities like TU Darmstadt, TU Berlin, TU Dresden and INEAST School of Asian Studies at University of Duisburg, Essen. With a vision of researching urban futures of human inclusion in built and mobility environments, he has set up Laboratory of Inclusive Design at the Department of Architecture & Planning, IIT Roorkee to advance research endeavors from design, policy, planning to human participation.

The host research group

The Urban Health Games research group (UHG) of the Department of Architecture hosted the 1st International workshop on Universal Design in urban mobility systems. UHGs’ research and teaching activities focus on people-centred urban design in building new collaborations between urban designers, health and mobility experts to address global challenges such as inclusion, active lifestyles and Access for All.
