Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

Abstract

This presentation points out that barrier-free mobility in the public space demands holistically designed solutions which consider every possible situation within the system. For example the use of a public transport system becomes frustrating for all passengers, when the entrance of transport can be used barrier-free, while the exit at the target station can’t. These rules of consistency need to be applied to any point of access, whether in height, shape or colors, or even to which type of flooring is used in which area. Showing examples of transit stops in the Frankfurt Rhein-Main area, the authors present new analytical tools and Universal Design principles in mobility systems.

Speakers’ bio

Prof. Peter Eckart studied Product Design at Bergische Universität GHS Wuppertal and later at HFBK University of Fine Arts Hamburg under Prof. Peter Raacke and Prof. Dieter Rams. With Bernd Hilpert he is leading unit-design, Frankfurt and Bern. The agency is networked with national and international designers from related media, design and architecture disciplines and works on projects in the fields of orientation systems and signage, information design, public design or exhibitions, with clients including Accenture, EZB, Historisches Museum Frankfurt, Messe Basel, Messe Frankfurt, Museum für Kommunikation Frankfurt, The Ciyt of Offenbach, Regionalpark Rhein Main, The City of Frankfurt, Fraport, Lufthansa, Deutsche Bahn, T-Mobile, Roche, Siemens, VGF. Peter Eckart has been Professor of Product Design and Integrated Design at HfG Offenbach since 2000, from 2007 until 2010 he was the Dean of the School of Design (formerly Product design faculty) and since 2011 he is Vice President of the University. Together with Prof. Dr. Kai Vöckler and Prof. Georg Bertsch he founded the institute of design for mobility and logistics. Together with Kai Vöckler he coordinates the project mo.de – mobility design project (LOEWE research cluster Infrastructure – Design – Society), which does design research in mobility systems to promote sustainable mobility.

Julian Schwarze, born on 12.05.1989 in Frankfurt am Main, studied product design at the University of Art and Design in Offenbach, graduated in 2015 and is now a research assistant and doctoral candidate in the research project Project-mo.de with a focus on mobility design. His doctoral thesis deals with system transitions in mobility spaces and their user-centered design. During his studies he completed internships in design offices in the Netherlands and Hamburg. The focus was on brand and user-centred design of industrial products, everyday products and packaging.

The host research group

The Urban Health Games research group (UHG) of the Department of Architecture hosted the 1st International workshop on Universal Design in urban mobility systems. UHGs’ research and teaching activities focus on people-centred urban design in building new collaborations between urban designers, health and mobility experts to address global challenges such as inclusion, active lifestyles and Access for All.
