Abstract
Our department has opted not to do the "usual" CS 1 course. We discuss the features of the resulting course, and how they are evaluated by our students. While several elements are unusual, evaluations have shown them to be very helpful and popular with our students. We hope this report will inspire other educators to "think outside the box in CS 1".
