Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

The energy efficiency of production resources, as machine tools, gains in importance as primary energy carriers become scarce and sustainability is part of political and social interest. The resulting high energy costs lead to a growing market for energy efficient machine tools and components. Since the application of energy efficient technologies often coincidences with higher initial investments, the assessment of ecologic and economic reasonable technical solutions play an important role. This paper gives an overview of actual developments in science and industry as well as a summary of the legislative initiatives of associations and the European community. The energy consumption based on the component level of a machine tool is outlined. The effect of the application of energy efficient technologies such as pumps at variable speeds or energy efficient cooling units will be presented referring to a predefined process on a demonstrator machining centre. A developed method helps to predict the energy demand per year, depending on various usage scenarios. The actual results of EC Product Group Study related to the Ecodesign of Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive 2009/125/EC will be summarized. The study purposes to propose policy options for energy related products such as machine tools. An alternative way is proposed by industry representatives who promote a self-regulation. This approach and further methodologies will be introduced in the following.
