Article, Bibliographie
Abstract
In the social sciences terrorism is often understood as a political strategy that is characterized by the use of violence to stoke fear. This article tries to analyse the symbolic logic behind this strategy and conceptualises terrorism as a mode of the politics of fear. The terrorist politics of fear aim to attack the nexus between protection and obedience which is fun-damental for modern structures of political domination. Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan is the symbol of this nexus: he is the monopolist of fear. Terro-rism is therefore analysed as a political strategy to undermine the belief in this symbol through acts of violence which cause fear.
