Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

This paper presents selected results of a field study realized in February 2017 to test the effect of dirt on the headlamps on stray light as well as the necessity of headlamp cleaning devices (HCD). The results show that with an increasing amount of dirt on the surface of a headlamp the amount of light available below the cut-off (vison of the driver) is reduced in a distinct way. Therefore, the light level in the region above the cut-off is increased due to the scattering of light from below the cut-off. This effect is especially true for the region around the HV-point. It can be shown that the activation of a HCD reduces the amount of dirt on the headlamp surface especially for higher degrees of soiling.
