Abstract

Increasing digitalization of engineering processes, networking of distributed IT systems and the effects on added value require efficient computer-aided tools and methods to support competitive engineering on a global scale. Networking, communication and the efficient visualization of 3D product information based on internet technologies are key challenges for the development of individualized products at the price of mass production. In this paper the concept for a 3D engineering dashboard based on RESTful web services is introduced. The 3D engineering dashboard is a platform independent information hub with a modular structure. It consists of a 3D viewer and smart widgets, each providing a separate functionality to fulfill a specific engineering task. Smart widgets are aggregated in templates, which represent different engineering domains and lifecycle phases. The 3D engineering dashboard is implemented as an Android app, enabling the use of mobile devices. It is validated by an Industrie 4.0 manufacturing use case demonstrating its potential. With the 3D engineering dashboard time and cost can be reduced, while interoperability in heterogeneous system landscapes is improved.
