Abstract

In the present study melting experiments are reported, which were performed in a cylindrical vertical test cell with n-hexadecane, n-octadecane, p-xylene and cyclohexane as test-materials. As essential parameter, the height of the test cell was varied between 7 cm and 14 cm and the temperature difference between 10 K and 30 K. It is found, that heat transfer between the heated jacket and the melting material can be described with a correlation of the form Nuz = C · Razm as long as the solid-liquid interface is almost cylindrical. With increasing deformation of the interface due to natural convection currents, the influence of the shape of the gap, formed by the molten material, can be taken into account by a correlation Nuz = f(Raz, Fo, Ste, z/H)
