Kurzbeschreibung (Abstract)

Production is a key to prosperity of an industry oriented society. Besides the production of goods, supporting services gain more and more importance. Until now European economies, especially Germany has strong a position in production of investment and consumer goods. But the production in high-wage countries as Germany faces challenges. These challenges arise on the one hand from so called megatrends and one the other hand from the new economic powers like the BRIC-States. To encounter these challenges strategies for the future of the production must be identified. These strategies include a vision of the future and the need for actions. The German ministry of research and education therefore assigned a research project to identify the fields of action for production for the next ten years. Based upon ten megatrends four fields of action were found: - New Products and Markets; - Production Management and Organization; - Production Technology; - Knowledge and People. For these fields potential research fields were defined. In this process, led by the PTW, more than 80 researchers from different institutes and about 400 partners from industry contributed their knowledge and experience.
