Abstract

In the current study the velocity fields produced by Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma actuators are investigated using a PIV system with high spatial resolution. The parameter space comprises several electrode sizes, modulation frequencies and actuator voltages. Common-Base Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (CPOD) is used to identify coherent structures in the flow such as translatory and rotatory fluctuation patterns superimposed on the mean velocity distribution. The CPOD provides a quantitative comparison of parameter dependent flow properties, thus optimal operation parameters can be identified.
